Message from the Parish Priest

The Parish of Mary, Mother of God presents this site to you as a means of really getting to know about our Parish Family here in Ponders End, Enfield. For newcomers, it is a way of offering a welcome. For our 'regulars', it is intended as a source of information. For those we rarely have contact with, it comes with the hope that it might move them to become more involved with the active life of our Parish Community. It would be wonderful if we could all work together to build a friendly, loving community with the Lord at the heart of it. This, of course, is an on-going process and requires the openness and hardworking collaboration of everyone concerned.
Revd. Fr. John Shewring (Parish Priest)

LOVE SAY IT WITH YOUR LIFE

Autumn Faith Sharing 2017
‘Love in Action’ these three simple words convey and express what the Church is called to be. This has always been the case. Pope Francis, since the beginning of his Papacy, has urged us to rediscover our essential mission to the world. To look around us, to see the need and then put our faith into action.

Our autumn Faith Sharing will follow this Catholic Social Teaching with the hope that it can be absorbed in reflection, discussion and prayer. The Faith Sharing will begin on the 8th October and continue for six weeks towards the World Day of the Poor on 19th November 2017.

OCTOBER—Month of Our Lady of the Rosary
At Fartima and Lourdes Our Lady has encouraged us to say the Rosary daily if possible. Its is a devotion that helps us meditate on the life of Jesus but it is also a powerful weapon in overcoming evil, temptation and sin.

A Plenary Indulgence can be gained from saying the Rosary together in church and as a family at home. Please make sure you have a Rosary and keep it with you all the time and try and say it as much as you can. Our Lady will always help you. Stay close to her.

Prayers for Cardinal Murphy O'Connor
His Eminence, Cardinal Murphy O'Connor, the retired Archbishop of Westminster has passed on at the age of 85. We request all parishioners to offer prayers for his soul and those of the faithful departed.
God be with your soul, our dearly beloved Cardinal

HOW TO GO TO CONFESSION:

• Examine your conscience - that is, reflect on what sins you have committed.
• When you meet the priest, begin by making the sign of the cross.
• You may say, “Bless me Father for I have sinned” if you wish.
• Tell the priest how long it is since your last confession - if you remember. If you can’t remember, say that to the priest too. Remember he is not there to judge you, but to bring the healing Sacrament of Reconciliation to you.
• List the sins you have committed - be honest and clear - there is no need to tell the whole story behind the sin either however.
• Penance - the priest will suggest something for you to do or say as a response to God’s mercy.
• The priest will then ask you to pray the Act of Contrition (Act of Sorrow).
• The priest will then give you absolution, to which you respond “Amen”.
• The priest will then likely say something like “God has freed you from your sin. Go in Peace.” To which you can respond: “Thanks be to God.”
• Don’t forget to do your penance! READ More...

REASONS TO MAKE THIS PILGRIMAGE
This could be a pilgrimage of a life-time. We will arrive in Lourdes to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Then we travel to Garabandal where Our Lady appeared over 2000 times to four young girls during the 1960’s. We then journey on to Fatima and stop on the way to celebrate Mass at Loyola where St Ignatius was born. At Fatima we will join in the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary which ended on 13th October 1917.

Because of the centenary the costs at Fatima have risen and cost will be £1,495 for 9 nights accommodation and because of the number of pilgrims wanting to go to Fatima we must have bookings registered before the end of February—but final payment does not have to be made until the end of August 2017. This will be a wonderful pilgrimage so please try and join us as we travel with Our Lady.

New Parish Groups

The parish is calling on parishioners to consider joining the following newly formed(revived) societies in our Church:
Legion of Mary1. Legion of Mary Society
The Legion of Mary is a worldwide association of Catholics who have formed themselves into a body to be of service to the church. Mary the Immaculate is the model and through her its members seek to present Christ to everyone.

The objective is the spiritual formation of all confirmed members of the church through prayer and the lay apostolic work to realize their vocation to holiness.

Our parish Praesidium (this is what a parish Legion of Mary group is known as) is called Our Lady Seat of Wisdom. We meet each Sunday at 4pm in the Parish Hall. You are most welcome to join us.

The legion holds a weekly meeting, which begins with the invocation of the Holy Spirit followed by the recitation of the Rosary, spiritual readings, talks and a discussion... Read more about the Legion of Mary Society

Holy Father's Intentions for SEP. 2017

Pope's Prayer Intention - Parishes: That our parishes, animated by a missionary spirit, may be places where faith is communicated and charity is seen.

Pope Francis has decided to keep one monthly prayer intention. He is no longer proposing an urgent prayer intention. However, on every Sunday on which he gives an Angelus Address, he asks for prayers for specific people and situations that are of deep concern to him.

Further information may be found at Pope's Worldwide Prayer Network.
